This Shiplap Pine Board came from Home Depot, the material is great for cutting your labor and time in half. It comes pre-primed ready for paint or stain, has a nickel gap, and is precut to 9/16 in. x 5-1/4 in. x 8ft for easy stacking and installation.

Shiplap comes in many sizes, finishes, colors and textures. If you prefer a farmhouse or country style the unpainted or wood grain textures and colors are a better option to lean towards.

Mark and measure time:

Measure the wall using a tape measure to the desired length you want your board, then mark those measurements on the board using a pencil, make sure your pencil line is straight and level.

For a straight edge a seed square was used.

For an angled edge an L-square ruler was used.

To avoid a mess indoors it is recommended to make your cuts outside. Cut your board on the penciled in marked line.

Installation:

The boards can be installed either from top to bottom or bottom to top, it’s a personal preference. We chose to install from the bottom to the top making gravity our friend while placing each board on top of the previous board before nailing in.

Building in a staggered position where the joints don’t meet is important, if the joints line up then the eye draws to each single line taking away from the finshed look.

End results:

A smooth finish was selected for this accent wall to give it a more seamless look, as well as add a subtle texture to the existing drywall.

The pre-cut nickel gap between each board is on point!

This finished accent shiplap wall creates a focal point that has a fresh current look adding some texture but nothing over the top.

To achieve a timeless shiplap accent wall some tips are:

  • Paint the shiplap the same color as the remaining walls with the same paint finish.

  • If you don’t have pre-cut shiplap it is important that the board is uniformed and clean cut.

  • Your very first board should be installed at the bottom corner or top corner depending on installation preference

  • Keep the size consistent between each row by collecting some nickels to use as spacers or popsicle sticks as you install, this will make the shiplap appear more contemporary.

  • Another way is to install your ship lap vertical using the same method

Thanks for visiting and I hope these tips will help and inspire you on your next project!
