How To Make A Custom Pillow in 7 basic steps

Have you ever walked in the store and just loved a pillow but hate the price tag? In this post you will see step by step instructions on how to make your own pillows that will not only add some pizzazz to your decor but will give you a sense of pride in making it yourself!



Things you will need for your custom pillow:

Sewing machine

Fabric

Ghostline paper

Tape measure

Yardstick or Ruler

Pen or Pencil

Fabric Scissors

Thread

Needle

Straight pins

1. Choose the desired size of your pillow and measure:

If you already have a pillow in the size that you like, you can take your measures from that pillow or use a pillow insert. Measure the length of the pillow from seam to seam, then add two additional inches for each side.

2. Mark your measurements:

This ghostline paper comes with lines to follow for easy marking and cutting.

The pillow width is at 21 inches. You will need to add two additional inches for each side, which makes the mark point at 23 inches. Draw a straight line to your mark.

3. Make your cuts:

This is a solid color fabric, lay the cut ghost board underneath your fabric and make your cut, if you have a patterned fabric you will need to line up your cut board on your pattern print that will show on the face and back of your pillow.

4. Bring together the cut fabric:

Secure your fabric inside out with pins. *Tip: if using pattern print, flip the fabric inside out and line up the pattern to match on the front and back.

5. Sew:

Sew together the pillow fabric leaving an opening to stuff or fill your pillow insert.

Trim the outer edge

6. Assemble:

Place your hand in the opening and pull the inside of the fabric out, using that same opening, stuff the pillow with your desired filling or pillow insert (if using a pillow insert your opening will be larger).

7. Hand sew:

Close the opening with needle and thread.
