Want to hear some pillow talk? With decorating and décor that is...Let’s take a look at how to choose the right pillows, how to arrange and incorporate them into different types of décor, as well as choosing the right type of fabrics.

A little FYI pillow trivia for you……

Pillows date all the way back to 7000 BCE, in early Mesopotamia and consisted of stone. They were used to keep bugs from crawling into the ears and were only owned by the wealthy. The more pillows one person owned the higher position in status they had.

Pillows in a Contemporary space:

The picture above shows how the colors in the pillows are pulled from the accessories which are the floor vase with sticks, as well as the art piece, this brings a sense of unity to everything in the space.


● Go with large square pillows which will create simple clean lines:

● Less is more (no more than three to a grouping).

● Choose fabrics with a simple weave or texture.

● Solid colors and or large geometric prints that tie in with other décor pieces.

Transitional spaces are a marriage between traditional and modern décor.


  • Keep up the straight lines with your pillows and bring in simple textures.

  • Mix modern and traditional keeping pillow groupings to a minimum.

Opt for different size, shapes, textures and layers of pillows that look identical in each grouping. Have fun with layering larger pillows on the ends and back with medium and smaller in the very front.

Things to remember for pillows in a traditional space:

  • Your overall look should be balanced, have a sense of symmetry and order!

  • An intentional neatness to your look.

  • More is more as long as someone is comfortable sitting without being in overwhelmed in pillows.

● Diversity in many styles.

● Choose different fabrics, patterns and colors but make sure each pillow has a color in common and stick with the same color between all of your pillows in your space.

  • Important to tie in the colors of your pillows with the accessories and art pieces in the room.

  • Start with the same size (largest pillows) on both sides of the couch for a balanced look, for sectionals also place a large pillow in the center then layer.

  • Follow these tips and your space will be beautiful just like you!
